THE 79th NEW YORK HIGHLANDERS
A monument stands in the old Calton cemetery in Edinburgh known as the Lincoln memorial. Built in 1893 in memory of the thousands of Scots who fought in the Union army during the American civil war. This is the only civil war memorial to be found outside of the United States. 

An inscription reads:
In memory of Scottish American soldiers
&#8220;To preserve the jewel of liberty in the framework of peace&#8221; 
 Abraham Lincoln
